THE SAUNA REPORT

The Boiler Room Sheffield Gay Sauna Has Permanently Closed

South Yorkshire’s only gay sauna has shut for good. The venue website now confirms what the community first spotted — The Boiler Room is no longer trading.

Updated
KEY POINTS
  • The Boiler Room Sheffield has permanently closed. The venue website now states the business “is no longer trading.”
  • The closure first surfaced on Squirt.org’s cruising forum — men posting after finding the venue shut in early April. An initial temporary-closure notice has since been replaced with the permanent confirmation.
  • It was Sheffield’s only gay sauna — and the only one in South Yorkshire. The region is now without one.
  • The nearest open alternatives are in Mansfield, Dewsbury and Leeds — 20 miles or more from Sheffield.

The Boiler Room Sheffield has permanently closed. The venue website now carries a short, unambiguous message: “The Boiler Room Sauna is no longer trading. CLOSED.” The earlier notice that the venue would reopen on 21 April has been removed. South Yorkshire’s only gay sauna is gone.

From Temporary Closure to Confirmed

The first sign of trouble was men posting on Squirt.org’s cruising forum — several had turned up and found the venue shut. A member of the gaysaunas.co.uk team logged in and verified the posts, and the venue’s own website confirmed a temporary closure until 21 April 2026. We covered the temporary closure at the time, noting no reason had been given and that we’d update as we heard more.

The update came quietly. The temporary-closure message was replaced with the permanent one. No reopening, no handover, no new operator announced. Just: no longer trading.

What Sheffield Has Lost

The Boiler Room was the only gay sauna in Sheffield — and the only one in South Yorkshire. Men from Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield and across the Peak District all fell within its catchment. For a large stretch of northern England, it was the nearest option.

It was a two-floor venue on Savile Street East: spa, licensed bar and social space on the ground floor; play and cruising upstairs. The weekly programme ran three Naked Days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) and Friday night parties — CumUnion, Bears Night, 5th Fridays — that pulled men in from across the region. After being taken over from Bronx Sauna and substantially refurbished, it built a solid reputation as a well-run, well-attended venue. That’s what South Yorkshire has lost.

A Region Without a Sauna

Gay saunas aren’t simply commercial leisure venues. For a lot of gay and bisexual men — particularly those who aren’t out, who live in areas with no visible scene, or who don’t feel comfortable in bars or on apps — they’re one of very few places where you can be completely yourself without explanation or performance. A venue like The Boiler Room served that role for an entire region.

Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire area now have no gay sauna at all. The next closures on any list would hurt, but losing the only one in a region is a different kind of loss — it doesn’t reduce options, it ends them.

Losing the only sauna in a region doesn’t reduce options. It ends them.

Where South Yorkshire Men Can Go Now

With The Boiler Room gone, men in South Yorkshire need to travel. The three closest open venues are:

None of those are local. For most Sheffield men it’s a 40-minute drive minimum, and public transport options are limited. The nearest-you finder will show the full list if you’re further out into Rotherham, Doncaster or the Peak District.

We’ll keep this page updated if a new operator takes over the Savile Street East site, or if another sauna opens in the Sheffield area. For now, South Yorkshire is a region without a gay sauna — and that’s the story.
